Week 12 Reading: Seven Secrets of the Goddess, Part A
For this week, I decided to watch the Epified videos about the secrets of the Goddess. Part A was about the secret of Gaia, and I felt like I learned a lot from the first two videos in this section. They were pretty short, but I will list a few of the things that I learned below that could be applied to storytelling.
- Women in ancient times were considered prizes to men. There seemed to be fewer women, especially women who were desirable, so the men fought over them.
- If a woman that another man wanted to be with fell in love with someone, they would often kill that person, just so they could get married.
- This is sort of where the arranged marriages came into play, just so that a woman could be married off to a man that desired her.
- The term virgin actually changed over time and used to mean someone who was prepared for childbirth.
- Men often searched out women because they seemed to have healing properties.
- Gaia was a goddess in Greek mythology, the mother of everything.
- Society saw women as a commodity that was desired and could be traded, stolen, or exchange.
- Since men controlled the economy, this is why women turned to prostitution, as they were deemed to have no other value.
- Men could deny their wives access to any other men.
- Women were valued for being mothers, and men in mythology would say that that was the greatest honor.
